Press Release vs Social Post: Where Your Announcement Actually Lands

Zero-click search hit 68% in 2026 and Australia now regulates social platforms. Why company research and milestones belong in a press release, not a post.

A social post is a rented, perishable asset that answer engines cannot cite. A syndicated press release is an indexed, independently published record that both search and AI systems can retrieve months later. For company research, milestones and announcements, that difference now decides whether the news still exists in six weeks.

This article is for founders and marketing leads deciding where to put an announcement.

Key takeaways

  • 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click in early 2026

  • AI Overviews appear on 20%+ of searches and cut click-through by nearly 60% when present

  • Australia's under-16 ban made social a regulated channel, with fines up to $49.5 million

  • Press releases produce third-party corroboration; posts produce self-assertion

The click is disappearing

SparkToro's 2026 analysis of Similarweb clickstream data found 68.01% of United States Google searches ended without a click between January and April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024. Searches producing at least one click fell 22.9% over the same period.

AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of searches, and where they appear, click-through drops by close to 60%.

The implication is uncomfortable but clear. Increasingly, your announcement isn't read — it's summarised. And summarisation systems pull from indexed, independently published sources with some standing. They do not pull from a LinkedIn post behind a login wall.

Social is now a regulated channel in Australia

In a development with no precedent anywhere else, Australia became the first country to bar under-16s from holding accounts on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube and Reddit, with platforms facing penalties of up to $49.5 million for failing to take reasonable steps.

UNSW Business School's Associate Professor Carmen Leong describes it as a reset of the marketing ecosystem. Brands including White Fox Boutique responded by moving spend into billboards and bus wraps from late December 2025.

The specific audience restriction matters less than the precedent it sets. Distribution you don't own can be legislated. A newswire placement on an independent masthead cannot be deplatformed by a policy change.

What a press release does that a post can't

Three things, none of which are about reach.

It creates an independent record. A journalist or masthead publishing your milestone is corroboration. You saying it on your own feed is assertion. Answer engines weight the first considerably more heavily, because that's how credible sourcing works.

It persists and stays indexed. A post's useful life is measured in hours. A syndicated release remains crawlable, searchable and citable indefinitely, accruing backlinks on high-authority domains.

It survives platform risk. Owned and earned media aren't subject to an algorithm change or a regulatory shift you didn't see coming.

None of this makes social redundant. Post the announcement too — but post the link, so the engagement points at something that will still be there when someone searches your company name next year.

Reach is rented. The record is yours.
